Managing Avoidances

How Synonyms Work

One Avoidance also catches the other names an ingredient can hide under on a label.

An Avoidance is an ingredient, allergen, or additive you want Chomply to watch for. The tricky part is that the same ingredient often appears under different names. Milk can show up as whey, casein, or lactose. Chomply knows these common aliases, so when you add one Avoidance it quietly watches for the others too.

Where synonyms come from

  • Built in: Chomply keeps a list of common alternate names for many ingredients. For something like milk, it already knows the usual aliases.
  • Yours: In the add or edit form, the Also known as field lets you type your own names, separated by commas. Chomply merges them with its built-in list and drops any duplicates.

Why it matters

A Scan reads a product's ingredient list and checks every name against your Avoidances and their synonyms. So even if a label lists only "casein", the Scan still returns a Verdict of FLAGGED. (A Verdict is Chomply's answer: CLEARED when nothing matches an Avoidance, FLAGGED when something does.) You added "milk", but the alias was caught for you.

Worried a tricky name is not covered? Add it to the Also known as field to be sure.
